New Zealand revised regulatory control plan for bivalve shellfish for human consumption

On 31 May 2022, the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) of New Zealand issued Notice no. 51583 to amend the Animal Products Notice - Regulatory Control Scheme for Bivalve Shellfish for Human Consumption.  The main contents of this revision include:  

(1)Strengthen the management measures of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in bivalve shellfish products to reduce the risk of food-borne diseases;  

(2) Changed domoicacid (a amnesia biotoxin of shellfish) from low risk item to high risk item, and set the maximum content level of domoicacid in bivalves at 20mg/kg;  

(3) Detection methods of toxic-generating phytoplankton in the newly added bivalves culture waters.

The notice takes effect on June 14, 2022.
