On 7 June 2022, the Ministry of Health of Thailand issued a notice on regulations on genetically modified foods (B.E.2022 No. 43). The main contents are as follows:
(1) Defining terms such as "genetically modified food" and "genetically modified organism";
(2) Explicitly prohibit the production, import and sale of GM foods, except those derived from GMOs listed in the permitted catalogue (both gm maize and GM soy) or from GMOs that have been biosafety assessed (both GM strains);
(3) The specific requirements of GM food are stipulated, including not containing any toxic or harmful substances or elements, nutritional value or required characteristics not lower than its conventional counterparts, and meeting the relevant announcement requirements of the Ministry of Health (if any);
(4) When using GMOs as food ingredients, the name and type of food shall be listed in accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Health;
(5) The production, sale and import of GM food must pass the food biosafety assessment of the National Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center and the National Science and Technology Development Administration ;
(6) The testing methods of genetically modified food are stipulated.
The announcement will come into effect 180 days after issue date.
