UK to amend bread and flour regulations

On 1 September 2022, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) published a consultation paper to propose amendments to the Bread and Flour Regulations. Major revisions include:

(1) to prevent neural tube defects in fetuses, non-whole wheat flour is required to be fortified with folic acid, 250g folic acid per 100g non-whole wheat flour, and the final product contains at least 187.5g folic acid;

(2) The transition period of folic acid supplementation in non-whole wheat flour was 24 months;

(3) importation of flour into Northern Ireland from EU member States is not subject to the Breads and Flours Regulations, allowing the importation and sale of unfortified flour. The deadline for submissions is November 23, 2022.
