On July 15, 2024, the General Administration of Customs of China issued Announcement No. 83 of 2024, announcing that with immediate effect, the importation of saffron from Uzbekistan that meets relevant requirements is permitted.
The saffron referred to in this announcement refers to the dried stigmas of the plant Crocus sativus (scientific name), commonly known as saffron (English name), belonging to the family Iridaceae, which are either wild or cultivated in Uzbekistan.
The cultivation bases and processing/packaging facilities for saffron exported to China must be audited and registered by the Plant Protection and Quarantine Service of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan (hereinafter referred to as the Uzbek side) and approved by the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China (hereinafter referred to as the Chinese side). The registration information should include the name, address, and registration number to ensure accurate traceability in case the exported goods fail to meet the relevant provisions of this announcement. Prior to the commencement of trade, the Uzbek side shall provide the registered list to the Chinese side, which will be published on the website of the General Administration of Customs of China after review and approval.
Furthermore, the announcement also details the relevant requirements that must be met for importation, including inspection and quarantine requirements, certificate requirements, packaging requirements, and more.
