The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued the "Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption". The new standards will be published in the Federal Register on July 20, with a 30-day comment period. The purpose of this standard is to minimize the risk of serious adverse health consequences from the consumption of contaminated agricultural products and food products. It will be codified in the United States Federal Code, Food and Drug (CFR21), Part 112. The standard sets out procedures and processes, including the collection of information on agricultural products and food products, to ensure that products entering the market are not associated with foodborne diseases, such as requiring surveillance and sampling plans, documentation and training, and ensuring that products intended for human consumption meet these requirements. The regulation also provides for certain exemptions and changes to some products such as bean sprout products.
