Nine local pastry makers in Singapore have been suspended from business

On July 27, 2022, the Food Authority of Singapore (SFA) has suspended various pastry products made by nine local pastry manufacturers with effect from July 26, 2022, due to the improper use of food additives, according to the SFA.

According to Singapore's Food regulations, benzoic acid/sorbic acid is not allowed in pastry products, except for their fillings, but not exceeding the maximum permissible limit. The SFA has been closely monitoring local pastry manufacturers since the detection of benzoic acid in locally produced pastry products in March 2022. The SFA detected high levels of benzoic acid/sorbic acid in pastries and components of pastries such as dough produced by nine pastry manufacturers.

In the interest of public health, SFA is taking enforcement action against the manufacturers involved and suspending the production, distribution and sale of related pastry products that do not comply with Singapore's food regulations. Food manufacturers should comply with Singapore's food regulations and ensure that only licensed food additives within licensed levels are used. As a precautionary measure, the SFA has also instructed pastry manufacturers to recall affected pastry products. A recall is under way.

Depending on the levels detected, consuming the affected product once or twice does not pose a food safety issue. Consumers should not consume foods with high levels of benzoic acid/sorbic acid for long. Benzoic acid and sorbate are common additives that are safe when used in small amounts, studies of animals fed high doses of benzoic acid have shown central nervous system disorders and brain changes. Animals fed high doses of sorbate showed reduced growth. Consumers who have consumed the affected products and are concerned about their health should seek medical advice.
