Singapore issues amendments to the Endangered Species(Import and Export) Act 2022

In August 2022, the Endangered Species (import and Export) (Amendment) Act 2022 was published in the Government Gazette of Singapore, which came into effect on the date of publication. The Act amended the Endangered Species (import and Export) Act 2006 with the following major amendments:

(1) the definitions of permit, readily identifiable parts or derivatives of plants and readily identifiable parts or derivatives of animals, listed species (i.e. list of endangered species in the Schedule to the Act) are amended to make clear that a plant, animal, etc. listed in the schedule includes any readily identifiable part or derivative containing the plant, animal, etc.;

(2) To amend the relevant provisions of listed endangered species in Singapore;

(3) Amend the import and export restriction requirements of listed endangered species to require that no person shall import, introduce, export or re-export any listed species without a valid licence and that any person wishing to import, introduce, export or re-export any listed species must apply for a licence;

(4) The corresponding penalties for violating regulations have been revised.
