On 14 August 2024, New Zealand's Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) issued a notice proposing amendments to the regulatory regulations and framework for genetic technology. Previously, genetic technology products in New Zealand were subject to the "Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996", with the Australian Food Standards Agency responsible for the regulation of GM foods. This revision aims to allow wider use of gene editing technology, supporting and advancing the development of gene technology in healthcare and combating climate change.

In terms of regulatory regulations, New Zealand intends to conduct classified supervision of gene editing technology products according to risk level based on Australia's Gene Technology Act, and formulate a corresponding exemption list. In terms of regulatory framework, New Zealand intends to follow Australia in setting up a dedicated regulatory body for genetic technology to ensure human health and environmental safety. MBIE will lead the development of legislation and work with the Ministries of Primary Industries, Health, Environment and Protection to advance the revision of regulatory regulations and frameworks for genetic technology. New Zealand expects to publish a new bill for public comment by the end of 2024.
