On September 10, 2024, Health Canada issued M-FAA-24-11, revising the list of permitted emulsifiers, gels, stabilizers and thickeners, approved to expand the use of polyglycerol esters of interesterified castor oil fatty acids as emulsifiers.

It is understood that Health Canada intends to authorize the use of polyglycerol esters of interesterified castor oil fatty acids in non-standardized mayonnaise dressings, non-standardized spreads, non-standardized sauces and non-standardized condiments, with a maximum amount of 0.8%. The maximum amount of the food additive used as an emulsifier for the coating of unstandardized chocolate-flavored confectionery was increased from 0.25% to 0.50%.

The amendment is effective from 10 September 2024.
