On 11 September 2024, the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) amended the import conditions for imitation chocolate in dairy products, so that imitation chocolate does not require an import licence from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry to be imported if the following conditions are met:
(1) Imitation chocolate does not contain cocoa or cocoa butter but is identical to chocolate in terms of appearance, composition, consistency and intended use;
(2) Exclude chocolate-flavored foods and beverages, chocolate-coated products or products containing chocolate and other ingredients;
(3) The goods must be commercially prepared and packaged chocolate and can be substantiated by a manufacturer's statement, invoice or food label; The goods must be clearly identifiable and biosafe;
(4) Upon arrival in Australia, these goods shall not be distributed, sold or used for animal consumption, environmental purposes (including as bioremediative products or fertilizers) for cultivation or veterinary treatment.
