The import and Export Bureau of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam cited relevant data from the General Administration of Customs of China showing that the annual demand for coconuts in the Chinese market is more than 4 billion, and the fresh coconut is about 2.6 billion, and the rest is used for processing. In the period from 2019 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of coconut imports in the Chinese market is 22.71%. In particular, in 2022 and 2023, coconut imports hit a record high of 1.095 million tons and 1.22 million tons, respectively. In the first seven months of this year, China imported coconuts from seven countries and regions around the world, with major supply markets including Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam, accounting for about 96.51 percent of China's overall market share.
Vietnam is now China's third largest supplier of coconuts. In the first seven months of this year, Vietnam exported about 111,000 tons of coconuts to China, worth 31.79 million US dollars, the export volume decreased by 30.6% and the value decreased by 18.6% compared with the same period last year; Market share fell to 22.57 percent from 22.86 percent in the same period last year. On August 19, 2024, China has approved the export of Vietnamese fresh coconut to China through official trade channels, which provides a great opportunity for Vietnamese coconuts to enter the Chinese market. According to statistics, Vietnam coconut cultivation area of about 200,000 hectares, the annual output of more than 2 million tons, the output value ranks fourth in the world.
