Sri Lanka's Daily Mirror reported on October 31 that although the Sri Lankan government has set the price of Nadabang rice at Rs. 220 per kilogram, the average price in the market has reached Rs. 235 per kilogram, according to recent reports.
In a meeting between President Dissanayake and the SL Consumer Affairs Bureau, rice traders agreed to put Nadu rice in the market at Rs. 218 per kilogram. However, the Weekly Food Commodity Bulletin for October 18-24 issued by the Hector Kobekaduwa Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (HKIART) states that the average price of Nadu Pradesh Grade I rice is Rs 235 per kilogram, much higher than the prescribed control price of Rs 220 per kilogram. Wholesale prices of all local rice varieties have increased by 8 to 20 percent compared to the same period last year.
The report also mentioned that due to shortage of stocks, the prices of Nadu Grade I rice, Nadu Grade II rice, red brown rice and white brown rice have increased by 1 to 3 percent in the price ranges of Rs. 220 to 230, Rs. 215 to 220, Rs. 205 to 212, and Rs. 208 to 215 per kilogram, respectively.
