On November 6, 2024, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine issued Resolution No. 3947-IX amending some of the laws and regulations concerning food safety, which was approved on September 4, 2024 and will enter into force on the date of publication and one year after the date of publication. Major revisions include:
(1) Amend the Milk and Dairy Products Act by adding "including vegetable fats, oils" after "non-dairy sources" in Part II of section 6;
(2) Amend the Basic Principles and Requirements on Food Safety and Quality to add the definition of trans fatty acids, and if the content of trans fatty acids in a food exceeds 2g/100g of total fat, information should be provided to other food operators on the content of naturally occurring trans fatty acids in non-animal fats of the food; Prohibit the use of hydrogenated vegetable oils and palm stearin in the production of baby food;
(3) Amend the Food Information for Consumers to prohibit the use of names such as "chocolate" if the product contains animal fats other than milk fat, and to include "oil" or "vegetable oil" in the label of a food containing refined oil of plant origin, the list of ingredients must include the name of the plant from which it is derived. The label must indicate "fully hydrogenated" or "partially hydrogenated".
