On October 28, 2024, Health Canada announced that it has added one gene-edited potato to the list of non-novel plant products for food use. The gene-edited potato was developed by the J.R. Simplot Company in the United States and was genetically edited to reduce polyphenol oxidase levels in the tubers, thereby delaying browning. Since the gene-edited potato was determined to be a non-novel plant product, it does not require pre-market safety assessment and is expected to be available as early as 2025.
