On 9 December 2024, the Ministry of Health of Malaysia released the Draft Amendments to the Food Act 1983 (Bill 281) for public consultation from 9 December 2024 to 8 January 2025. New content related to import and export food supervision:
(1) Add provision: with the permission of the government of the exporting country, the food exporter's production site is inspected to prevent hazards or confirm the safety of imported food. The aim is to strengthen controls on food export sites in exporting countries to ensure compliance with food regulations;
(2) Add provision: allow a reasonable quantity presumption of entry of food for sale but declared for personal use. The aim is to reduce food declaration fraud for non-marketing purposes;
(3) New penalties for imported food, food contact materials, food contact materials, or substances on their surfaces that may transfer toxic, harmful or harmful to health that do not comply with the Act or regulations.
