The Global New Light of Myanmar (GNLM) reported on January 10 that the Department of Agriculture of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation (MALI) said that China's General Administration of Customs (GACC) has issued an announcement on November 11, 2024 on the phytosanitary requirements for importing fresh pineapples from Myanmar, allowing fresh pineapples from Myanmar that meet the quarantine requirements to be imported into China. Enterprises interested in exporting fresh pineapples to China were requested to submit letters of intent by February 28, 2025 to the provincial and state agricultural departments.

As required by China Customs, pineapple plantations and processing factories exporting to China must be registered with Customs through the Myanmar administration, and the list of those approved will be published on the Customs website. Pineapple plantations exporting to China must strictly follow Good Agricultural Practices and implement quality management, food safety traceability systems and integrated pest management measures. Packaging includes washing fresh fruit with high-pressure spraying and inspecting and removing insects, snails, weed seeds, soil, pesticide residues and weeds. For the first two years, the Myanmar authorities will inspect samples of no less than 2 percent of the export volume, and if no problems are found within two years, the percentage of samples inspected will be reduced to 1 percent.

Myanmar pineapples are mainly grown in northern and southern Shan State and are harvested from June to September each year. It is understood that before June 2019, Myanmar pineapple can be exported to China through the green channel of border trade, after the suspension of the pineapple industry in Myanmar has been adversely affected, although the expansion of Thailand, Singapore and other markets, but the market share is extremely limited.
