Indonesia issues regulations on genetically modified food

On 30 November 2022, the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority issued regulations on the management of genetically modified foods. The main contents are as follows:


(1) Food enterprise that produce and/or import genetically modified food (PRG) must comply with the safety, quality, nutrition and labeling requirements stipulated by laws and regulations. PRG food includes food raw materials, food additives, auxiliary materials and processed food;


(2) Food enterprise that produce and/or import PRG food and circulate in Indonesia must obtain PRG food distribution license. In addition to PRG food distribution license, food operators that produce and/or import PRG food for retail packaging transaction must hold distribution license in accordance with laws and regulations;


(3) Food operators who produce PRG food in Indonesia and/or import PRG food with retail packaging as PRG food transaction must attach labels according to the provisions of laws and regulations;


(4) PRG foods in circulation prior to the entry into force of the Regulation shall comply with the provisions of the Regulation within 12 months after its promulgation;


(5) When the regulation entered into force, the Regulation No. 6 of 2018 on the Regulation of Food from genetically Modified Products (State Gazette of the Republic of Indonesia, No. 674 of 2018) was revoked and declared invalid.

 

The administrative regulations shall come into force as of the date of promulgation.
