Australia revised regulatory standards for new food ingredients allowed

On February 10, 2023, the Federal Register of Australia issued Notice F2023C00185, amending Schedule 25 of the“Australian and New Zealand Food Code”, which is the regulatory standard for new food ingredients that are allowed to be used.


The main content includes: expanding the scope of use of new food ingredients phytosterols, phytostanols and their esters, allowing them to be added to plant protein alternative beverages (product protein sources are grains, nuts, beans, etc.), the use requirements are : 


(1) The calcium content of the final product should not be less than 100mg/100mL, and the saturated fatty acid content should not exceed 0.75g/100mL; 

(2) The total phytosterol content in the final product should be between 0.8-2.2g/250mL.


This revision is effective from the date of posting.
