Chilean beef exports reached 24,283 tons from January to December 2022, up 39.3% year-on-year, while exports reached $129 million (FOB, same below), up 62.9% year-on-year, according to a new report from the Chilean Office of Agricultural Studies and Policies (Odepa).
The report also said that in 2022, the average price of Chile's foreign beef exports reached US$5,306 per ton, up 17% year-on-year, according to Chile's PortalPortuario website.
In terms of export destinations, China is the largest buyer of Chilean beef, with Chile exporting 22,288 tons of beef to China last year, up 46.3 percent year-on-year; exports amounted to $114 million, up 75 percent year-on-year. Meanwhile, Spain, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, South Korea, Costa Rica, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Switzerland are also major buyers of Chilean beef.
In addition, in 2022, Chile exported 234,751 tons of pork and pig offal, down 12.4% year-on-year; 171,867 tons of poultry meat, up 12.7% year-on-year; and 645 tons of hamburger meat, down 39.2% year-on-year.
On the other hand, from January to December 2022, Chilean beef imports amounted to 242,900 tons, down 15.8% year-on-year; imports amounted to $1.434 billion (CIF, same below), down 13.9% year-on-year; the average price of imported beef was $5,902 per ton, up 2.2% year-on-year.
During this period, the main source countries of Chilean beef imports were: Paraguay, with imports of 125,828 tons (-1.9%) and $709 million; Brazil, with imports of 77,481 tons (-26.6%) and $409 million; and Argentina, with imports of 23,439 tons (-26.6%) and $187 million.
In addition, Chile imported 103,010 tons of pork and pig offal, down 27.6%; 158,035 tons of imported poultry meat, up 4.2%; 3,160 tons of imported hamburger meat, up 22.6%.
