India revised regulations on special foods such as special dietary foods

On April 11, 2023, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued a notice to revise the 2022 FSS (Health Supplements, Foods for Special Dietary Purposes, Foods for Special Medical Purposes, Probiotics and Related Foods) Regulations, which will come into effect on April 18, 2023. The main contents include:


(1) It is allowed to add additional food additives, enzymes and proteins to health products, but they must be standardized or approved to be used to prepare other standardized foods as specified in the food safety and standards;


(2) Grains, vegetables, spices, etc. used in the ingredient list should be approved by the authority;


(3) The products should indicate the people who are suitable for use, such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, athletes, etc.;


(4) Food advertisements for special dietary purposes for the public shall clearly indicate that the product should be taken in accordance with medical advice;


(5) Revision of relevant requirements for probiotics, vitamins, trace elements, etc.
