According to data released by the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) on the 7th, as of May this year, Brazil's total chicken exports have reached 2.183 million tons, an increase of 9.7% over the same period last year; At the same time, Brazil's chicken export revenue reached $4.281 billion, an increase of 13.4%.
Brazilian website forbes reported that among the main export destinations for Brazilian chicken, China's purchases topped the list in the first five months of this year, reaching 328,000 tons, an increase of 32.6 percent over the same period in 2022.
Outbreaks of bird flu among wild bird populations have not changed the health status of Brazil, the world's largest exporter of chicken. ABPA data show that in May, Brazil exported 433,300 tons of chicken meat, an increase of 0.9% compared to the same month in 2022; In terms of revenue, however, Brazilian chicken exports in May amounted to $867.4 million, down 4.1% from a year earlier.
Ricardo Santin, president of the ABPA, said: "Chicken exports (in May) remained above the monthly average of 430,000 tonnes, which shows that the international community sees the responsibility of the Brazilian government and the private sector in dealing with the avian influenza outbreak in wild birds, as well as the confidence of the international market in the health situation in Brazil."
In addition, ABPA also pointed out that in May, Brazil's pork exports were 101,700 tons, an increase of 13.9% year-on-year. Luis Rua, head of marketing at the association, said: "What is important to watch this month is the volume of exports to the newly opened Mexican market. Mexico is one of the world's top three importers of this product and is now one of the top 10 export destinations for Brazilian pork."
Mr Rua said: "Although pork exports increased by more than 20 per cent in the first five months of this year compared with the same period last year, the market share of traditional key export destinations has declined. This shows that Brazil's policy of market diversification, such as opening new markets in the short term, has been successful."
