Russia's consumer protection agency Rospotrebnadzor will tighten regulations on imports of Japanese seafood if Japan continues to release radioactive water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean.

In March 2011, after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant meltdowns caused by an earthquake and tsunami, Russia imposed a ban on imports of Japanese seafood, but the exemption was conditional on receiving a statement from the Japanese government that the concentration of radioactive substances in the product was below the standard level set by applicable law, which must be accompanied by a level of radioactive cesium.

In response to Japan's nuclear sewage plan, Russia said it would impose stricter import controls on products from the Sea of Japan, while China and other countries have done the same.
