The export value of Russian seafood products fell by 12 percent in the first 7 months, while the trade in the Chinese market increased significantly

Affected by European and American sanctions, the export value of Russian seafood has decreased by 12% year-on-year since the beginning of this year. Russia's Fish Union (Russia's Fish Union) issued a statement on August 2, stating that the country's seafood exports in the first seven months were about 2.9 billion US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 12%, and the total export volume was about 1.4 million tons, which was basically the same as the same period last year.


China is Russia's largest export market, accounting for 53% of the export volume and 43% of the export value. South Korea accounted for 34% of the export volume and 35% of the export value; the Dutch market accounted for 8% and 14% respectively, and the Japanese market accounted for 1% and 3%.

By category, frozen pollock accounted for 44% of the export volume, up 23% year-on-year, and 21% in value, up 26% year-on-year. The main markets include China, South Korea, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Pollock fillets accounted for 5% of exports by volume (down 42% year-on-year) and 7% of exports (down 48% year-on-year).


Frozen herring accounted for 19% of exports, an increase of 40% year-on-year, and accounted for 5% of exports, an increase of 9% year-on-year, mainly to China, South Korea, Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

Frozen Atlantic cod accounted for 5% of the export volume (down 3% year-on-year) and 7% of the export value (up 5% year-on-year), mainly to the Netherlands, China and Norway. Frozen Pacific cod accounted for 3% of exports (down 17% year-on-year) and 5% of exports (down 25% year-on-year), mainly to China, South Korea, Indonesia and Denmark.


Russian crabs accounted for 2% of the export volume, an increase of 19% year-on-year, and accounted for 22% of the export value, an increase of 21% year-on-year. The export volume in the Chinese market increased by 43% year-on-year, while South Korea and Japan decreased by 16% and 37% year-on-year.

The All-Russian Fishermen's Association (VARPE) predicts that in 2023 Russia's total exports will increase by 2% year-on-year, with exports amounting to 5.9 billion US dollars last year.


In 2022, Russia will export seafood worth 2.75 billion U.S. dollars to China, with an export volume of about 937,300 tons; and export seafood to South Korea with a value of 142 million U.S. dollars, with an export volume of about 543,200 tons. Last year, Russia exported about 1.03 million tons of pollock, 224,000 tons of cod, and 144,000 tons of wild salmon. 57,400 tons of crabs.
