On August 24, 2023, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued a notice to amend the Food Safety Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) with effect from March 1, 2024. The main revisions are as follows:

1. Single malt whiskey means a distillate obtained from a fermented mash using sprouted barley, without the addition of any other grain, distilled only in a tank still, and produced in a single distillery. Single grain whiskies are distilled from fermented mash using malt or unsprouted grain and are produced at Italian distilleries. Single grain whisky shall not include single malt whisky and blended malt whisky or blended grain whisky;

2. Alcoholic beverage labels must not contain any nutritional information other than kilocalories. Such energy-related declarations should be voluntary.
