On October 16, The director general of the Department of Disarmament and Nuclear Nonproliferation Affairs of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA) met with Russia's charge d 'affaires in Japan. During the talks, the Japanese side reiterated its regret over Moscow's decision to suspend imports of seafood products from Japan and called on Russia to cancel the decision.
Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision said, it would join China since October 16 in imposing restrictions on Japan's supply of aquatic products following the release of nuclear wastewater from Japan's stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant. These restrictions will remain in place until the necessary comprehensive information is provided to confirm the safety of aquatic products and their compliance with EAEU requirements, as well as an analysis by the Agency's experts.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan said, "Regarding Russia's decision to tighten restrictions on imports of Japanese seafood products due to the discharge of Japanese water treated through the ALPS system, we draw attention to the fact that tightening restrictions on imports of Japanese seafood without scientific basis is unfair and runs counter to international efforts to relax or remove restrictions on imports of food products from Japan." Russia's latest decision is deeply regrettable and we strongly call for its reversal."
Japan on August 24 began dumping water into the ocean to cool the stricken reactors at the Fukushima 1 nuclear power plant, where nuclear fuel melted down. On October 5, Japan began discharging the second batch of nuclear wastewater.
