Japan plans to revise nine food standards

On October 24, 2023, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan (MAFF) issued nine proposals, including No. 550003779, to revise nine food standards. The main contents include:


(1) New labeling requirements in the standards for refined edible oil, refined lard, and shortening (the above product labels should be mandatory to mark 9 basic information such as product name, storage method, shelf life, raw materials, specifications, and country of origin);


(2) Revise the detection methods of sugar and salt in the flavor seasoning standards;


(3) The revision content of the remaining standards includes updating the reference standard, adding the lead and title, adjusting the order of chapters, etc.;


(4) Formulation of edible glucose standards, the main contents include definition and classification, quality and sensory indicators (anhydrous crystalline glucose moisture content is less than 0.5%, etc.), raw materials requirements (only starch as raw material, shall not be added to food additives), labeling regulations, inspection methods, etc.


The period for comments on the proposals ends November 22, 2024.
