On November 2, 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed banning the use of related food additives (brominated vegetable oil, BVO) and continuing to evaluate the safety of other chemical substances.

The FDA prioritizes review of chemicals in food based on risk, scientific, and regulatory authority. Although brominated vegetable oil (BVO) has a long history of use in food and was once considered Generally safe (GRAS), the FDA continues to study it to understand its potential health effects. California recently took steps to ban the use of four food ingredients in the state, including BVO, and the US FDA has also taken measures and actions, and brominated vegetable oil (BVO) will face a ban in the United States, not just California's ban on brominated vegetable oil (BVO).

The FDA is reviewing and reevaluating the safety of various chemicals in food. In fact, the FDA is currently reviewing the color additive regulation that authorizes the use of FD&C Red 3 in drugs and foods, including dietary supplements, banning the use of color additives that can cause cancer in animals or humans when consumed.
