New wine labeling regulations to be introduced in UK

On 19 December 2023, the British Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) website announced that from 1 January 2024, new labeling regulations will apply to all wines imported into England. imported wines must display the name and address of the following businesses:

 

(1) Are based in England, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man;

 

(2) Sells wine under its own name;

 

(3) The name and address will be that of the Food Business Operator (FBO) or, if the FBO is not based in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man, the name and address of the importer;

 

(4) Wines labeled with the name and address of the importer do not need to use the words "importer" or "imported".

 

Wines labeled before 1 January 2024 do not need to be relabeled to comply with the regulations if any of the following conditions are met:

 

(1) Wine that has been labeled and is being aged;

 

(2) Wines already in the supply chain;

 

(3) Wines that have been placed on the market before 1 January 2024.
