SPUTNIK - The United States has banned the import of salmon, cod, pollock and crab originating in Russia but processed in third countries, the US Treasury Department said.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has determined the list of fish and seafood to which the new ban applies.

"Produced or cultured in whole or in part in the Russian Federation or in waters under the jurisdiction of the Russian Federation or by vessels flying the flag of the Russian Federation, whether or not such fish, seafood, and food products derived therefrom consist of, or are further processed outside of the Russian Federation: salmon, cod, pollock, and crab," the document says.

The ban on seafood imports from the Russian Federation to the United States has been in force for a long time, but so far no provision has been made for processing in third countries. In addition to fish and seafood, the U.S. has committed to applying similar rules to diamonds and alcoholic beverages.

The ban comes into force on 21 February 2024.
