Philippines proposed guidelines for classification of vitamins and minerals in dietary supplements

On 9 January 2024, the Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a consultation document on the proposed development of guidelines for the classification of vitamins and minerals in dietary supplements, with a 60-day comment period. Main contents:

 

(1) Scope and definitions;

 

(2) General Guidelines. Dietary supplements may be in the form of capsules, tablets, liquids, gels, powders, or pills, and may not be used as regular foods; there are no active pharmaceutical ingredients; there are no clinical therapeutic indications or claims; the maximum serving sizes for vitamins and minerals for adults are partially shown in the table below; labelling should contain advice to consumers not to exceed the maximum recommended daily use; and labelling should not state or imply that supplements can be used to replace meals or diversified diets.
