EU amended food category names for alcoholic beverages and the use of additives in certain alcoholic beverages

On 25 January 2024, according to the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU), the European Commission issued Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/347 amending Regulation (EC) 1333/2008 on the nomenclature of food categories for alcoholic beverages and the use of additives in certain alcoholic beverages. The main amendments are:

 

(1) Terms and definitions: e.g. replacing the term alcohol with alcohol concentration by volume;

 

(2) Category names: new additions such as wines and other products; spirits; aromatic wine products; other alcoholic beverages (including mixtures of alcoholic beverages and non-alcoholic beverages, and other alcoholic beverages based on distilled alcohol and with an alcohol concentration of less than 15% by volume);

 

(3) In alcoholic beverages, quinoline yellow, sunset yellow, carmine, etc. shall not be authorised for use in "vodka";

 

(4) The implementing regulation shall enter into force on the 20th day after its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union, shall be binding in its entirety and shall be directly applicable in all Member States.
