On 29 January 2024, the website of the Russian Ministry of Finance reported that the Russian Ministry of Finance has proposed legislative amendments that would permanently authorise the Government of the Russian Federation to increase the number of border checkpoints. At these checkpoints, the Customs will apply veterinary, phytosanitary and sanitary-quarantine controls on imported plant and livestock products.

The proposal was approved at the session of the Government of the Russian Federation. The move is based on the successful experience of the pilot implementation at some border checkpoints between 2019 and 2022, which included the organisational programme of state control and the mechanism of interaction between different state agencies, which effectively reduced the time of state control of imported goods and increased the capacity of the checkpoints. The adoption of this Act will simplify the process of passing goods and transport across the border without waiting for the intervention of other State control agencies.
