According to the Thai Tuna Industry Association (TTIA), the export volume of Thai frozen tuna (including canned products) in the first four months of this year increased by 19% year-on-year to reach 174,166 tons. The value of exports rose 21% year-on-year to a record high of 27.5 billion baht ($751.4 million).
Supatra Rewpairoj, executive director of TTIA, said the export growth was mainly due to a decline in stocks in 2023, as well as sufficient supply from the end of last year to the first quarter of this year at reasonable prices. In addition, tuna transportation was relatively stable without major problems.
Meanwhile, the volume of raw tuna imported into Thailand has been growing steadily. 224,262 tons of frozen whole tuna were imported into the country in January-April, up 22 percent year-on-year, with imports valued at 12.1 billion baht, up 25 percent year-on-year.
