Japan proposed to revise a number of food standards

On May 30, 2024, Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) issued several notices, including 550003936, proposing to revise a number of food standards. Some of the specifics include:

 

(1) Revise the "Standard for Aged Sausages" to add definitions for the cooking process, raw animal meat, raw fat, etc.; and to add requirements for filling sausage casings, etc;

 

(2) Revise the "Standard for Sausages", specifically revising the requirements for determining the quality of different grades of products as well as the test methods for moisture and starch content;

 

(3) Revise the "Standard for Edible Vegetable Oils", supplementing 15 cited standards, adding new labeling requirements for edible palm stearin, edible palm oil and edible coconut oil, and revising the test methods for indicators of refractive index and acid value of the products, etc;

 

(4) Revise the "Standard for Chilli Sauce", specifically revising the requirements for quality indexes of special grade products and general products, as well as the methods for testing and calculating salt content, etc.

 

The feedback period for the above revisions is open until June 28, 2024.
