Argentina proposed to amend the Codex Alimentarius

On June 19, 2024, the Argentine Ministry of Health and Quality issued several consultation documents on the proposed revision of the Codex Alimentarius, with a comment period ending July 19, 2024. The main contents are as follows:

 

(1) The addition of calendula as an edible flower in the vegetable food of Chapter XI of the Argentine Codex Alimentarius;

 

(2) Article 888 of Chapter XI of the Codex Alimentarius on vegetable foods includes palm fruit as a food of plant origin;

 

(3) Codex 1398 adds: basic methacrylate copolymer (INS1205), anionic methacrylate copolymer (INS1207), as a coating agent for solid dietary supplements in tablet, capsule or tablet form, with a maximum usage of 10g /100g, prohibited in supplements intended for infants and young children;

 

(4) Non-alcoholic beverages are included in the category of fortified beverages, and the definition and scope of fortified foods are modified; Sodium content in non-alcoholic aqueous electrolyte supplements ranges from 450-1150mg/l, potassium content ranges from 78-700mg/l; Labels must contain mandatory declarations of potassium and other nutrients;

 

(5) Article 660, Chapter 9, of the Codex Alimentarius: The addition of canary seeds to starchy foods - cereals, flours and their derivatives, the products must be labeled fit for human consumption;

 

(6) Glycine iron and ferrous bisglycinate are permitted as ingredients in dietary supplements and fortified foods.
