Australia approved amendments to infant formula standards

On 13 June 2024, Food Standards Australia New Zealand issued Circular 293-24 approving the Amendment to the Infant Formula Standards (Proposal P1028). Major revisions include:

 

(1) Prepare and revise the definitions of elder infant formula food, premature infants and food for special medical purposes for premature infants;

 

(2) Revision of the rules for the use of product nutrition claims;

 

(3) Some new safety and health indicators, such as the aluminum content of infant and larger infant formula food <0.5mg/kg, the aluminum content of special medical infant formula food for premature infants <0.2mg/kg, etc.;

 

(4) The category of nutrients allowed in the new part.

 

The amendment will take effect from the date of publication in the Commonwealth Register of Australia for a transition period of five years.
