On July 3, 2024, Peru's National Institute of Quality (INQ) issued technical standards for tilapia. The main elements are:
(1) Scope: establishes good practice procedures, conditions, recommendations, controls and other activities that must be followed in the production of tilapia farming to ensure that the final product meets quality standards and is fit for human consumption;
(2) Production quality requirements: tilapia production centers must comply with existing mandatory regulations, e.g., environmental certificates with environmental management tools, concessions or authorizations to carry out aquaculture activities, permits or other documents, etc.; compliance with aquatic animal welfare: operations should be supervised by trained and qualified personnel so that the loading and unloading of fish avoids injuries and causes the least possible stress, etc.; the concentration of the drugs to be used should be determined at the time of harvesting must be below the permitted level, and feeding should be suspended for at least 12 to 24 hours before harvesting begins.
