On February 1, 2022, Health Canada announced that it would allow manufacturers to voluntarily increase the vitamin D content of cow's milk, goat's milk, and margarine.

Increasing vitamin D content in milk and margarine will eventually become mandatory, depending on the implementation of relevant regulations in the future. Canada requires that the vitamin D content in relevant milk must be 2μg/100mL. The vitamin D content in the relevant goat milk must be 2μg/100mL. The vitamin D content in the relevant margarine must be 26μg/100g.

The requirement is effective from the date of publication in the Federal Register of Canada.
