FAQs of Nutrition Facts on Chinese Prepackaged Food I

1. Can I leave out the nutrition labeling of prepackaged foods?
A
All mandatory labeling items that shall be indicated on the nutrition labeling of a prepackaged food include energy, content values of core nutrients and percentage of Nutrient Reference Value (NRV), excluding Prepackaged Foods Exempt from Mandatory Nutrition Labeling.

2. What are the requirements of the nutrition labeling size?
A
According to "National Food Safety Standard, General Standard for the Labeling of Prepackaged Foods"(GB 7718), the requirements of the "Where the largest surfaces area of a package (container) of the prepackaged foods is more than 35cm2 , the minimum size of the words, symbols and numerals in the mandatory labeling information shall not be less than 1.8mm in height" applies to the nutrition labeling.

3. Can I leave out the title of Nutrition Facts?
A
Nutrition Facts includes 5 essential elements: title of the table, name of nutritional components, content of nutritional components, NRV% and the square frame. Title of the table shall be named "Nutrition Facts".

4. When there are other nutritional components to be indicated, what appropriate forms can I adopt to highlight the claims of energy and core nutrients?
A
All mandatory labeling items that shall be indicated on the nutrition labeling of a prepackaged food include energy, content values of core nutrients and NRV%. When there are other nutritional components to be indicated, appropriate forms shall be adopted to highlight the claims of energy and core nutrients, which include increasing font size, changing font, changing color, changing the alignment or otherwise, and so on.

5. Can I leave out the nutritional fortification substances in the Nutrition Facts?
A
Content value and the percentage of Nutrient Reference Values (NRV) of the nutritional component of a prepackaged food in which nutritional fortification substances are used shall be indicated in the Nutrition Facts. When labeling other nutritional components other than those listed in Table 1 which were allowed to be fortified according to GB14880 and the announcements of the Ministry of Health (which is now known as the National Health Commission), such nutritional components shall be listed following the nutrients as set forth in Table 1.

6. If hydrogenated and/or partly hydrogenated oil and fat are contained in food ingredients or adopted during processing, does trans-fat (fatty acid) content need to be indicated in the Nutrition Facts?
A
If hydrogenated and/or partly hydrogenated oil and fat are contained in food ingredients or adopted during processing, trans-fat (fatty acid) content shall also be indicated in the Nutrition Facts.
