Germany published the results of its food microbiology inspection for 2021

On 5 April 2022, the German Chemical and Veterinary Drug Inspection Agency published the results of the food microbiology inspection in 2021.  A total of 11,000 samples were tested in Germany in 2021, about 85% of the pre-Covid-19 pandemic level, including 8,468 planned samples and 2,532 target samples.  The main findings included :

(1) 53 planned samples (11.3%) and 501 target samples (19.8%) were collected for specific reasons, such as suspected decomposition, poor sanitation or as disease samples, amount to 1,454 samples, comes in 13.2% of the total amount;

(2) Defects were found in 776 samples (7.1%), of which 21 samples (0.2%) were assessed as harmful; 

(3) 300 samples (2.7%) were judged unfit for human consumption due to microbiological test results;

(4) 588 samples (5.3%) had serious health problems;

(5) 21 samples were identified as hazardous to health, including 5 cases of salmonella contamination, 6 cases of Listeria monocytogenes contamination, 4 cases of VTEC/ STEC contamination, 1 case of Bacillus cereus contamination, 1 case of perfringens contamination, and 1 case of aureus and enterotoxin contamination.

(6) The product guidelines indicate that raw foods that cannot be eaten immediately should be cooked, thus even some raw foods containing pathogens have not been formally assessed as a health hazard and do not show up in the statistics.
