On 19 May 2022, the Finnish Food Authority released a report on food poisoning incidents in 2021. In 2021, the National Food Poisoning Register registered 46 foodborne epidemics involving nearly 1,400 people. The most common pathogen is norovirus. In 2021, more than 700 people were affected by salmonella outbreaks, and norovirus remains the most common single pathogen in epidemics (nine epidemics, 260 infections), with food-borne norovirus prevalence often affected by infected kitchen workers. Epidemics and the number of people affected vary greatly from year to year. In 2021, the number of epidemics caused by all kinds of bacteria was the highest in more than a decade.
