On May 24, 2022, the Uruguayan Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries issued the "Organic Agricultural Products Certification Act", the main contents are:
(1) Applicable to organic agricultural products, organic aquaculture and integrated production, to ensure that production, processing, packaging, labeling are in accordance with the provisions of the law for organic certification and sales;
(2) Established a national certification system, the validity period of registration is two years;
(3) import of organic products should obtain approval by submitting certification documents that proves that the certification is equivalent to the region's official technical standards or reference standards in the relevant references. The certification documents should be issued by the competent authorities or its authorized certification body from the country of origin. The importer must agree to the inspection of relevant records and certificates by the competent authority;
(4) For products that do not comply with the provisions of the decree, it is forbidden to label "ecological", "organic", "biological" or use the prefix "biological" or "ecological" in labels or other types of identification.
The decree shall come into force on the date of promulgation.
