The Bahamas will remove tariffs on 36 kinds of food

Amid a historic rise in inflation, the Bahamian government intends to remove tariffs on about 36 food items, the Nassau Guardian reported on May 30.  Last week, Bahamian Prime Minister Davis introduced the Excise Act (Amendment) 2022 and Customs Act (Amendment) 2022 to the House of Representatives, which detailed the changes to the tariff rate reduction. The original tariffs rate for most planned tariff-free items is 5%, including cheese, lettuce, corn, cucumber, pea, sweet pepper, chili pepper, pumpkin, yam, cauliflower, broccoli and sweet potato. Preliminary processing beef, pork and turkey tariffs will change from 20% to zero, this will help to reduce the cost of living increase as a result of inflation.
