India to revise parts of food safety standards

On 29 June 2022, the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued F.No.Std/SP-05/T(Nutraceutical-2022, proposing to revise some contents of Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Food for Special Dietary Use, Food for Special Medical Purpose, and Prebiotic and Probiotic Food in the Food Safety Standards.  Major amendments include:  
 
(1) Issued the scope of application of the Regulations and definitions of various products.  Food in these Regulations refers to products specially processed or prepared for specific nutritional or dietary purposes, whose special ingredients are clearly different from normal consumption food, and are suitable for people over 2 years of age to take orally within the prescribed quantity and duration, excluding products for extra-gastrointestinal use. Products claiming to treat, prevent or alleviate any particular disease, disorder or condition are not covered by this Regulation except as specifically permitted by the Food Safety Standards Authority under the FSS regulations.  Foods for infants under 2 years of age should comply with FSS regulations;  
 
(2)The physical properties of the products are specified.  If the product appears in regular patterns such as strip, biscuit, candy, etc., the difference between the product and regular products shall be clearly stated on the product label;  
 
(3)The label of the product shall be stipulated.  In addition to the general label content, the product label should also include the following information: ①Indicate the product category of "health care products/nutritional supplements/special dietary food/food for special medical purpose/prebiotic food/probiotic food" in capitals and bold words near the product name or brand name;  ② If the product is specially formulated for a certain age group, the target consumer group and/or age group should be indicated;  ③ "Non-medicinal" statement, "Recommended usage", "Use period", "daily consumption limit", "excessive consumption warning"shall be indicated;  ④Warning of known side effects, contraindications and interactions with other products;  ⑤ "This product can not replace a diversified diet", "the product should be stored beyond children's reach";  ⑥ Nutrient content, effective nutrient content declaration, etc.  

The feedback period of the revised opinions is 60 days from the date of release.
