The Office of Cereals of Algeria (OAIC, OAIC : Office Algérien Interprofessionnel des Céréales ) will buy wheat from Russia in an international tender at a price of US $364 to US $365 per tonne, according to a report in Algeria's main media, Elmoudjahid, citing Reuters on September 4. According to the tender announcement, which was due on August 30, the total amount of wheat is 50,000 tons. The relevant party in Algeria has not officially announced the result of the bidding.
Following a fall in wheat prices in the international market and the resumption of grain exports from Ukraine's Odessa port, Algeria has purchased 660,000 tons of wheat at $384 per ton. In June, OAIC bought 740,000 tons at $445 per ton. The Algerian government said it has sufficient wheat stocks and will continue to buy wheat in the international market to further safeguard the country's food demand.
Algeria imported 10.6 million tons of cereals in 2021/2022 and 13.1 million tons in 2020/2021. France remains the main supplier of wheat to Algeria.
