On 31 May 2023, the Kenya Standards Authority issued a circular on the development of standards for carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks (DEAS 29:2023). The comment period is up to 11 June 2023.

The main contents include: product terms and definitions, classification, general requirements (one or more nutritional/non-nutritional sweeteners, vitamins and minerals can be added, no precipitation except for fruit and other particles) and specific quality requirements, hygiene standards and heavy metal standards (see the table below), packaging and labelling requirements (net volume in ML/CL/L, Production date, etc.), sampling and testing methods and items, etc.
