On 7 August 2024, the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) issued Circular CL2024/71 on the development of Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of Food fraud, with a comment period ending 3 September 2024. The main contents include:
(1) Designed to provide guidance to competent authorities on the prevention, detection, mitigation and control of food fraud in order to help protect the health of consumers and ensure fairness in the food trade;
(2) Sets out the types of food fraud, including addition, substitution, dilution and false advertising, and sets out the principles for the prevention, detection, mitigation and control of food fraud through measures commensurate with the level of risk, as well as coordination and cooperation between competent authorities;
(3) Establish the role, responsibilities and action requirements of the competent authorities in the event of suspected food fraud.
