On August 13, 2024, the Consumer Agency of Japan released the FY2023 Food Labeling Consumer Survey Report, a survey of 10,000 consumers designed to investigate consumer understanding of the food labeling system, the status of the enactment of the Food Labeling Law and other related laws and guidelines, and consumer demand for food labeling, and to be used for the review of the food labeling system. The main contents are:
(1) Scope: Understanding and utilization of the food labeling system, knowledge and understanding of the new system of labeling the origin of raw materials , balance of font size and amount of information on labels, display methods, etc. ;
(2) 66.1% of the respondents know how to check the shelf life through food labels; 30.2% of the respondents know that the shelf life of processed food labels can be seen in specific years and months; 62.7% of the respondents will refer to the “Ingredients” label when purchasing food; 52.4% of the respondents will check the “Additives” label when purchasing food. The label of “additives” is available for 62.7% of the respondents; 52.4% of the respondents check the label of “additives” when purchasing food; 20.2% of the respondents know that they can check the location of the factory and the name of the manufacturer on the website of the Consumer Affairs Bureau.
