On August 30, 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan (MAFF) issued four standard announcements, including No. 540, 541, 545 and 549, to revise four food standards. They are:

(1) Revise the standard for canned or bottled agricultural products (JAS 1305:2024), including adding new reference standards, revising quality criteria for canned pineapple and other categories, and adding raw materials requirements for some canned agricultural products (salt, soy sauce, protein hydrolysate and other seasonings can only be added to products other than canned fruit meat);

(2) Revise the standard for canned or bottled livestock products (JAS 0531:2024), including adding new reference standards and revising the detection and calculation methods of product protein content;

(3) Revise the standard for canned or bottled aquatic products (JAS 0446:2024), including adding new reference standards, and revising the quality requirements for bottled or canned tuna and skipjack tuna (products should be stripped of skin, bone, and other parts, and the ground meat content of solid matter is less than 18%);

(4) Revise the inspection method standard for food, beverage and edible oil, specifically to stipulate that when the content of a single portion of food, beverage or edible oil is less than 50g, the inspection sampling amount is 50g. The above amendments take effect from the date of publication.
