India revised regulations on standards for contaminants and biological toxins in foods

On October 22, 2024, the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) revised the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) Regulations with effect from April 1, 2025. Key elements:

  

(1) Addition of maximum residue level of 5ug/kg for ochratoxin A in wheat, bran, rye, barley and coffee; and maximum residue level of 1000ug/kg for deoxynivalenol in wheat, rye and barley;

  

(2) A list of 14 drugs such as Carbadox and Chloramphenicol prohibited for use in meat, eggs, milk and aquatic products; the maximum residue level of Chloramphenicol is 0.3ug/kg and that of the remaining items is 0.001mg/kg.
